Mercury senior executives announce retirements; Lemke named general counsel
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (May 12, 2008) – Two Mercury Marine senior executives with more than two decades each of distinguished service – Jim Hubbard, vice president and chief of staff; and Joseph Pomeroy, general counsel and vice president law – have chosen to retire from the company this summer.
Hubbard, 64, has worked for Brunswick Corporation, Mercury's parent company, his entire 36-year career. He joined Brunswick in June 1968, later taking off four years to further his education before working in several Brunswick businesses as a human resources professional and labor attorney. In 1990, he accepted the position of vice president of human resources at Mercury's headquarters in Fond du Lac. He was named Chief of Staff in 1992.
During his tenure with Mercury, Hubbard's responsibilities have included human resources, facilities, engineering & services, aviation, environmental compliance, organization and executive development, as well as community and marine industry relations. In the latter role, Hubbard represented Mercury Marine with the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and the FishAmerica Foundation (a fishing advocacy organization) and several local groups, such as the Fond du Lac County Economic Development Corporation, the Fond du Lac Arts Council and the Fond du Lac Conflict Resolution Center.
"This was not an easy decision for me because being a part of the growth and success of this great company has meant so much to me,” Hubbard said. “Deciding when to retire is never easy. However, my wife and I are eager to explore the next chapter of our lives together, so, off we go.”
Pomeroy, 57, joined Mercury Marine in 1987 as staff counsel after 11 years in private practice. A Valparaiso University School of Law graduate, he was appointed general counsel and vice president of law for Mercury in 1992. Some of Mercury's most important legal events have occurred during Pomeroy's tenure, including the IBBI antitrust litigation, numerous acquisitions and joint ventures in the United States and abroad, Mercury's “dumping” challenge against the Japanese outboard industry and a number of other key issues.
"My work for Mercury Marine and Brunswick Corporation has afforded me rare opportunities to contribute to the company's success,” said Pomeroy. “I will always be grateful for the opportunities I was given, and I am humbled by the outstanding people with whom I have been privileged to work over these many years."
Pomeroy has developed a strong reputation for building successful relationships within the marine industry, with Mercury dealers, its boat builder partners, and other key constituencies. Like Hubbard, Pomeroy has devoted his energies and expertise to the NMMA and other industry and professional associations.
“Words cannot capture either the significance of Joe's and Jim's careers or their contributions to the success of Brunswick Corporation,” said Brunswick Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dustan E. McCoy. “But more important are the examples they have set for those around them with their integrity and professionalism. They have helped set the standard and prepare the organization to carry on.”
Todd C. Lemke succeeds Pomeroy as Mercury's general counsel.
Hubbard's staff and Lemke will report to Steve Cramer, Mercury vice president and chief financial and administrative officer, and Brunswick's functional leaders under Brunswick's operating model.
Lemke joined Mercury Marine in 1991 as a staff attorney following seven years in private practice. He was promoted to Assistant General Counsel, his current position, in 2004. Lemke has directed a broad range of legal activities for Mercury Marine and has been involved in all aspects of Mercury's business, including litigation. In addition, Lemke has represented Mercury Marine with a number of marine industry associations and regulators, including the U. S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
Lemke received a bachelor of arts degree from Ohio's Denison University and a law degree from John Marshall Law School in Chicago.
