Cummins MerCruiser Diesel Introduces Quantum Technology to Sterndrive Market
(Charleston, South Carolina) – Cummins MerCruiser Diesel has extended its innovative Quantum diesel technology across three new engine platforms. Suitable for sterndrive and inboard applications, the new QSD Series includes 2.0, 2.8 and 4.2 liter engines in four and six cylinder configurations. This entirely new engine line-up will be EPA, RCD and IMO certified and available in ratings from 115 to 350 metric horsepower.
In keeping with Quantum family specifications, QSD engines are painted in Cummins MerCruiser Diesel's marine white and feature an advanced ECM with SmartCraft™ compatibility to monitor engine parameters. Modernized components like integrated heat exchangers and exhaust manifolds contribute to the design strategy aimed at reducing engine weight and size. The QSD series incorporates a High Pressure Common Rail fuel system that reduces smoke, noise and vibration for improved sociability. The turbocharger and seawater aftercooler have been designed for improved throttle response and performance. The combination of these features provides unparalleled advantages including extended range and instant engine diagnostic capability for the operator. The QSD range is designed as a drop-in replacement for many gasoline applications. In addition to RCD, EPA and IMO certifications, specific ratings have been developed to meet BSO/SAV emissions regulations.
The QSD family incorporates newly designed torsional couplers for a smoother ride in inboard applications. The new QSD2.0 liter features a High Pressure Common Rail fuel system and will be available with ratings from 115 to 150 metric horsepower. This high power density package features a four valve head with counter balanced shafts for smooth running while providing incredible fuel economy and performance.
“The QSD series is based on the successful, high pressure, common rail design, Cummins MerCruiser Diesel brought to larger recreational and commercial boats a few years ago,” says Gary Dickman, Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Marketing. “Compatible with MerCruiser diesel sterndrives, boaters now have the freedom to cruise farther while enjoying a quieter, smoother ride.”
