Inaugural Brunswick Summer Classic a Tremendous Success

MUSKEGON, Mich., Sept. 7, 2007 – The first Brunswick Summer Classic Tournament proved to be a tremendous success for the players, coordinators and Brunswick Bowling.

In an effort to bring a tournament to the East Coast to support competitive and tournament bowling, the event was held at Brunswick Zone Carolier in North Brunswick, N.J., also the site for the U.S. Open, one of four majors on the Denny's PBA Tour, for the next three seasons.

Tommy Semiz, who owns and operates Tommy Semiz Pro Shop inside Brunswick Zone Carolier, served as the tournament director for the Brunswick Summer Classic. Semiz also successfully operates other tournaments under "World Match Games.”

Brunswick guaranteed the main event prize funds for first through fourth place with $10,000, $5,000, $2,500 and $2,500 respectively. In the two divisions of ages 49 and under; and 50 and over, a total of 153 bowlers signed up for the main event qualifying. After four rounds of qualifying, 39 bowlers made it to the finals. Dan MacLelland of Saginaw, Mich., took home the first place grand prize of $10,000.

Brunswick presented its latest high-performance ball, the Fury Pearl, to all bowlers who paid to enter the main event. During the qualifying events, one bowler scored a perfect game using a Fury Pearl. There were also two high games of 279 each rolled during qualifying rounds.

The tournament included a Saturday Night Super Sweeper with a guaranteed prize fund from Brunswick. Matt O'Grady, 21, of South Amboy, N.J., who entered the Summer Classic as his first adult tournament, took home $5,000 as the winner of the three-game sweeper during which the top 16 advanced to the finals using one game, head-to-head matches.

In addition to sponsoring the tournament, Brunswick also provided support staff for ball drilling as well as technical support. PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia also shared his expertise and advice with participants. The lanes were maintained with the Brunswick Authority22® lane maintenance system.
