Second Annual Brunswick Summer Classic Champion Crowned

MUSKEGON, Mich. Sept. 26, 2008 – The second annual Brunswick Summer Classic Tournament proved to be a tremendous success for the players, coordinators and Brunswick Bowling, leaving hopes of adding additional Summer Classic tournaments in the future.

The event was once again held at Brunswick Zone Carolier in North Brunswick, N.J., also the site for the U.S. Open, one of four majors on the Denny’s PBA Tour. The Summer Classic tournament was brought to the East Coast in 2007 in an effort to support competitive and tournament bowling in that area.

Tommy Semiz, who owns and operates Tommy Semiz Pro Shop inside Brunswick Zone Carolier, served as the tournament director for the Brunswick Summer Classic. Semiz also successfully operates other tournaments under "World Match Games.” Assisting Semiz in the coordination of the tournament was Buzzy Goodman, who operates the Northeast Senior Challenge, a senior bowling tournament series.

For the second year in a row, Brunswick guaranteed the main event prize funds for first through fourth place with $10,000, $5,000, $2,500 and $2,500, respectively. Three divisions were offered this year: ladies; ages 49 and under; and ages 50 and over, a new seniors division.

A total of 164 bowlers signed up for the main event qualifying. Yannaphon Larpapharat of Thailand, took home the first place grand prize of $10,000. Mike Rose, Jr., Rochester, N.Y., finished in second place.

Brunswick presented its latest high-performance ball, the Twisted Fury Solid, to all bowlers who paid to enter the main event. During the qualifying events, Johnny Petraglia, Jr., son of legendary bowler and Brunswick Pro Staff member Johnny Petraglia, used a Twisted Fury to score the only perfect game of the tournament.

The tournament included a Saturday Night Super Sweeper. Chris Werner, Rochester, N.Y., took home $2,250 as the winner of the three-game sweeper during which the top 16 advanced to the finals using one-game, head-to-head matches. The runner-up was Dan Maclelland, Saginaw, Mich., the 2007 Brunswick Summer Classic main event champion.

In addition to sponsoring the tournament, Brunswick maintained the lanes with the Brunswick Authority22® lane maintenance system.
