Herculean Efforts of Employees Recognized at Brunswick Zone in Lowell, Mass.
LAKE FOREST, Ill., May 4, 2007 – History does indeed repeat itself. But this time, employees at the Brunswick Zone bowling center in Lowell, Mass., were prepared.
Last spring, Brunswick Zone – Lowell suffered extensive damage after heavy rains and floods pelted the East Coast. Following a swift recovery, the bowling center was up and running, but the center's employees did not rest on their laurels – they implemented a resourceful and aggressive emergency flood plan.
When the heavy rains returned again to the East Coast in April, the Brunswick Zone employees were prepared. On April 17, water from a nearby river began to rise. The river crested with 4 inches of water surrounding the bowling center. To preserve their facility, the employees used snow plows to push the water away from the building and used sump pumps, generators and fans during the efforts. They stayed up all night to reinforce the sand bags and plastic barricades, which prevented almost all water from entering the building.
According to the insurance adjuster who surveyed the center on April 18, the facility would have suffered significant damage if it had not been for the "Herculean efforts" of the bowling center crew.
“We'll resist the temptation to say that the chances of battling back from yet another ‘100-year storm” are slim. We are ready the next time – and every time – a state of emergency is declared, because we care about each other,” said Gail Malatesta, general manager of Brunswick Zone – Lowell. “That's why Brunswick employees will always be proud to serve the Lowell community, as we have done for more than 40 years. Our deepest gratitude goes to the City of Lowell, our police and fire departments, and community volunteers.”
